The lecture from the human geographer Dr. Heike Jöns (Loughborough University, Leicestershire) examines how the geographies of academic knowledge production in the sciences and the humanities globalized through the rise of academic travel in the early 20th century and subsequently shifted from an emphasis on scientific fieldwork and knowledge networks in imperial contexts to transatlantic academic exchanges. The analysis of research leave schemes and academic exchange programs from different European perspectives emphasizes the important role of geopolitics, socio-economic developments, subject-specific travel cultures and cultural affinities for shifting global knowledge flows that became increasingly dominated by Anglo-American practices of academic knowledge production in the expensive natural and technical sciences.
