Until recently, it was not at all clear whether the civilization of Teotihuacan possessed writing (as opposed to iconography and notation systems). Discoveries at two elite sites in the heart of the city have radically changed our assumptions and provided us with the first incontrovertible evidence for writing. The glyphic system of Teotihuacan is reminiscent of what we find much later in Mixtec and Aztec codices, but are the resemblances fortuitous or indicative of systemic continuity?
In the workshop Prof. Dr. Gordon Whittaker (Georg-August-Universität Göttingen) and the participants will explore the possibilities and see where the evidence leads to.
